The Texas Residential Construction Commission closed September 1, 2010. There is currently no licensing of contractors in Texas on a State level. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has licensing requirements for plumbers, electricians and air conditioning and refrigeration contractors.
In some Texas cities, such as San Antonio and Austin, general contractors must register and obtain building permits in advance of commencing construction. This is intended to ensure compliance with local building codes and regulations.
EXAMPLE: The City of San Antonio’s Development Services Department requires one of two types of registration for general contractors; one for contractors doing residential building and the other for limited repair work.
